Two people share a room on a night train. They have never met, and by the arithmetic of the roster, they never can. The Trelawny is the last sleeper in the west of England: forty-two berths, Paddington to Penzance and back, six nights a week, no service on Saturdays.
It runs in both directions at once — which means two trains, two crews, and one small crew berth that belongs to one of them one night and the other the next. Morwenna Treloar works the down train.
She is the funniest woman on the western nights, she is known by forty people and truly seen by none of them, and fourteen months ago her grandmother left her a house on a Cornish terrace where nine of the eleven front doors now have key safes on them.
She drives past the end of that road every morning on her way to a rented room. She has never been inside. Jory Pascoe works the up train.
He mends things nobody has asked him to mend, he knows the price of everything to the penny, and he will not tell her what he does on Saturdays.
They begin writing to each other in a battered handover book wedged behind the heater panel — a book four decades of night crews have written in, with BE KIND, SOMEONE READS THIS on the cover in a dead man's marker pen. It starts as a complaint about a kettle.
By November it is the truest thing in either of their lives. And every night at twenty-one minutes to three, out on the flooded Somerset Levels, their two trains stand side by side in a passing loop for forty seconds, four metres apart, and each of them puts a hand on the glass.
Then the company opens a consultation on the future of the service, with a decision due by the end of April — and the one question Wenna keeps asking turns out to be the only one Jory cannot answer.
THE PASSING LOOP is a warm, funny, sharp-edged novel about an empty house and a man with nowhere to put himself, four metres apart in the dark, six nights a week.
It is for anyone who has ever done the night shift, loved a place that could not afford to keep them, or found that the person who knows them best is the one they have never stood in a room with.
It will make you laugh out loud in the first fifty pages and it will not let you put it down at three in the morning — and when you close it, you will want to tell somebody. Please do. Leave a review and tell them about the book behind the panel.
