On the second night of a new job, a dying man says two words in a voice with no illness in it — and then a number. Asta Holm sits up with the dying.

She has done it for eleven years and two hundred and six times, in other people's houses, through the small hours, and she is very good at it: the lamp turned to the ceiling, the mouth kept comfortable, the hour written at the top of every page of the night book.

She took the work because the dying do not make speeches, and because she once told a lie about a woman's last words that has been holding up her brother's life ever since.

Then she takes a private contract at the last farmhouse on a sand road in Dorthern Denmark, where the dune has already taken four farms and has this one on a date, and where a seventy-eight-year-old man is dying in the front room with weeks left. He sleeps twenty hours a day.

And in the small hours he speaks — one number, and one word, and then nothing at all. The numbers are positions. Something is dictating a sentence, out of order, twelve words long, and it can only use words that have been spoken aloud in that room.

Which means it has been waiting a very long time. And it means that if Asta reads to him — a catalogue, a newsletter, a dictionary, page after page, night after night — she can make it go faster. Except that nothing in that room comes free.

There is a chart with fourteen days on it in two colours. There is a note on Asta's file that says she puts words into the mouths of the dying. There is a woman upstairs who has not come into that room after dark in forty-two years.

And there is a date nailed to the gatepost, after which the house and everything under it will be given back to the sand. Eleven of the twelve words will arrive.

The last one is a word nobody in that house has said out loud since 1983 — and the only way to give it to her is to stand in the dark and say it, and pay for it with the last night a good man has left.

A slow, quiet, devastating ghost story about grief, testimony, and what it costs to be the only person holding a true thing.

For readers of Hidden Pictures, Mexican Gothic and The Silent Patient — and for anyone who has ever sat in a chair beside a bed at four in the morning and wished, just once, to be told the truth. If you finish it, tell somebody.

This is a book that lives on being passed on — and a review is how the next reader finds it.
