They have been married for six years. They have spent eleven weeks in the same room. In October 2020, in a government office in Valletta that smelled of floor polish and toner, Estelle Mifsud married a man she had met four times. It took twenty minutes.

The two witnesses were strangers pulled out of the passport queue and given a euro each for the coffee machine. Neither of them did it for love, and neither of them did it for papers. They did it for a bank.

Idris Tarhuni had worked in the same Senglea bakery since he was nineteen and its dying owner wanted him to have it; no lender in Malta would put a mortgage in front of a man on a one-year permit.

Estelle had just buried a father who left her a practice, a warrant she had not grown into, and his debts. Apart, neither of them could borrow a cent. Married, the bank said yes in four days.

Then he went back to his oven and she went back to her mother's, and for six years they met twice a year to sign things. Now the state has opened a file.

On the eighth of September they will be interviewed separately, in two rooms, on the same morning, from the same list of questions, and their answers will be laid side by side.

If those answers do not match, the marriage is a fraud: he is removed and barred, she is struck off, the bank calls in the loan, and the bakery is sold to whoever wants the sea view. And they are forbidden to rehearse.

Any evidence that they have compared a single answer is itself proof of the thing they are accused of. Their advocate gives them one instruction, in a room at thirty-six degrees, with a fan that does not turn: "Don't learn the answers.

Learn each other." So a woman whose entire working life is spent making documents true moves into two rooms above a wood-fired oven, in the hottest summer anyone can remember, in the most crowded half square mile in Europe, and sets out to acquire — honestly, at speed, and in front of a street that misses nothing — six years of a marriage she never had.

What neither of them knows is that somebody reported them six weeks after the wedding. That one of them has not been inventing anything. And that the question the state is asking has an honest answer which is also, if she is brave enough to give it, the winning one.

A TRUE COPY is a warm, funny, slow-burning novel about paperwork and appetite, about a town that feeds people and watches them, and about the difference between a life you were talked into and a life you chose and then filed under the wrong heading.

It is for anyone who has ever been kind to somebody by deciding, on their behalf, what they could bear to know.

If you love a slow burn with real weight underneath it, a found family you will grieve when the book ends, and an ending that is earned rather than handed out — this one will keep you up, and then it will make you hungry.

Read it in two sittings and then argue about it with somebody. And if it stays with you, please leave a review: for a book about people who go unasked for, being talked about is the entire point.
