For fifteen years, Renata Coria has told the same man she loves him — a metre apart, in a padded room with no windows, in words neither of them wrote. She is the Spanish voice of one of the most beloved actresses in the world.
He is the voice of the man that actress loves on screen. Eleven films, four hundred sessions, and one rule, inherited from Renata's formidable mother and never once broken: nothing said at the microphone counts. Then the twelfth and final film arrives with new paperwork attached.
The studio will pay for the dub, but only if every voice consents to be copied — and after this picture there will be no more human voices at all. Fourteen weeks to delivery.
One last scene on the schedule: a goodbye, for two people, recorded together in one room, the old way, in a building that is about to close. Renata sets out to save the work and finds she is trying to save something else. Because the machine can already do her voice.
It can do it faster, it can do it in a single pass, and — the first time she hears it — it can say the thing more beautifully than she ever has, because it has never once been afraid to. What it cannot do is get it wrong.
And when the microphones are finally cold and there is no script in front of her, Renata discovers the worst thing she has ever learned about herself: that she is fluent in every language except her own.
ROOM TONE is a warm, funny, quietly devastating love story about two people at the top of a profession that is being switched off in real time; about a mother and a daughter who have spent twenty-two years protecting each other from the same secret; and about what a voice is actually for.
Set across one autumn in Mexico City — the last rains, the marigolds, a converted house on a street named after an American state — it is a novel for readers of Jojo Moyes, Taylor Jenkins Reid and Gabrielle Zevin, and for anyone who has ever loved a voice without ever learning the name.
If you have ever left the room and thought of the right sentence eleven minutes too late, this book was written for you.
Read it, then tell someone what it did to you — and if it earns it, leave a review, because in this trade the only thing anybody ever gets paid in is being heard.
