Show jumping is the only Olympic sport in which men and women compete against each other over the same fences for the same medal — and almost no rider on earth owns the horse underneath them.
Roza Sikora was born in the flat above a dealing yard, the daughter of a Polish groom who came west with one bag and never in forty years sat on a horse where anyone could see him.
She rents fourteen boxes on sand at the edge of a Dutch village, buys difficult young horses nobody else wants, and makes them good.
She kept exactly one: a near-black mare she bought for three and a half thousand euros at eleven o'clock at night, in a sale ring with twenty people left in it, after an auctioneer had apologised for her.
Five years later that mare jumps a metre sixty and flicks one ear back at Roza before every single fence — and does it for nobody else alive. Roza does not own her. Kaspar Wendeling has never bought a horse in his life.
He rides for Germany, he is fourth in the world, and every animal he has ever won on was found by his father's scouts and sold out from under him at the top of its value. His family's firm owns the mare.
His family's firm has one unbreakable rule: nothing in this yard is anybody's. They meet, as they meet forty times a year, on a course walk — two riders pacing the same seventeen metres of sand at seven in the morning, counting. She makes it seven strides. He makes it six.
What begins that night is conducted entirely in the gaps of a fixture list, in lorry parks after midnight and hotel corridors in four countries, and told to absolutely nobody — because the day anyone finds out, she loses the horse she made, and he loses an argument with his father.
The risk has never once been shared equally, and both of them know it. Then Roza wins the greatest prize in the sport, and by the same evening it has cost her everything.
A love story about the difference between the things we earn and the things we are given, DOUBLE CLEAR is set in a world of diesel, frost, entry fees and five-o'clock mornings, among people who are extremely good at a difficult job and are paid almost nothing for the part of it that matters.
There is no villain in it. Everybody behaves reasonably. That is the problem.
If you love a slow burn built out of years rather than weeks, a heroine who is the best in the room and still cannot get a seat at the table, and an ending that is paid for in full — this one will keep you up.
Read it, then tell somebody: a review from you is how the next reader finds it.
