A fragrance worn by millions has no legally recognized creator—and this single fact is the foundation of the novel’s entire horror. Grasse, the perfume capital of the world. Of the four thousand hectares of flower fields that once covered this valley, only fifty remain.

The roses are picked for three weeks in May, beginning at four o’clock in the morning, and one name still stands above them all: the city’s last independent perfume house, one hundred and thirty years old, run by a man the industry considers the greatest nose of his generation.

Margot Vial, thirty-one, possesses a nose that appears only once in a generation—and a diploma she never earned. She wants the only thing that truly matters in this profession: her own name on a bottle.

Her greatest obstacle is not a locked door, but a woman no one takes seriously anymore—the founder’s great-granddaughter and the owner’s wife, who lost her sense of smell in a fall nine years ago and has done nothing since except tend the gardens.

What begins as a coldly calculated rise becomes, over eighteen months, something neither woman can control.

In a house where there are no flowers, no candles, and not a single fragrance because the husband has arranged it that way—and where he hands his wife a test strip across the table in front of guests at every dinner, saying, “Try it, darling.

You never know”—nothing is as harmless as it seems. And the woman no one has asked about for years has had nine years to listen.

THE SIGNATURE is a slow-burning psychological thriller about ambition, envy, and the question of who owns a creation that no court in the world recognizes as a work of authorship.

It is a story about two women who want the same thing for opposite reasons; about a man who never raises his voice yet commits the most horrifying act in the novel; and about a mid-story twist that rewrites the first half of the book in retrospect.

It is told in prose that can almost be smelled—Provence at sunrise, cold stone, wet grass, and a house above the city that smells of nothing. For readers who devoured THE HOUSEMAID, GONE GIRL, or THE LAST MRS.

PARRISH—and who this time want an ending that truly resolves everything. Read the first twenty pages. If you are not still awake at four in the morning afterward, it was not the book’s fault. And if you are, tell others what you read and leave a review.

A novel about a woman whose name appears nowhere depends precisely on someone saying it aloud.
