She has been telling him everything for four weeks — and she has no idea who he is. Ivy Carrick has never in her life recognised a human face. Not her mother's, not her own in a shop window.
She has spent twenty-four years navigating the world by coats and voices and the way a person takes a set of stairs, and hiding it from everybody, because the one thing worse than not knowing who someone is, is watching their face change when they realise you don't.
Her older sister Junie did the recognising for her. Junie fed her names at parties, squeezed her arm at funerals, rang her every day at four. Junie was not only the person Ivy loved most. Junie was the way Ivy saw.
Then Junie is found at the bottom of a stairwell in a city-centre car park, and the police call it what it looks like: a robbery, a stranger, a Tuesday. What Ivy finds in her sister's car is a notebook with eight names in it, and eight dates, and three words underlined twice.
She is a night dispatcher at a taxi firm. She has no qualifications, no authority, no credibility, and a mother who has never entirely believed her condition is real.
But she has something nobody has ever thought to use: a private index of human beings, built by hand since she was twenty, recording every person she has ever met by build, gait, smell, voice and how they breathe going up a hill.
And she has a friend — the only person left who believes her. A big, quiet man in a navy work fleece who carries her shopping up nine floors, who texts her at four in the morning when she cannot sleep, and who has never once had to tell her his name.
EVERYONE LOOKS LIKE YOU is a psychological thriller about the small, ordinary courage of admitting what you cannot do — set in a rain-lit British city where eight people can die in eight flats and nothing in the system produces a single signal.
It is built on a real neurological condition that affects around one person in fifty, and it uses it to do something no other thriller can: put the reader inside a woman who is looking straight at the answer and cannot see it. You will finish it in two sittings.
Then you will go straight back to Chapter Four and read it again, because every sentence still stands — and you will want to tell somebody. Please do. Leave a review, and tell the next reader what you saw coming and what you didn't.
