Six people found the most beautiful thing any of them would ever see, and it cost a nineteen-year-old boy his life within the hour.

In October 2003, after nine years of digging, an amateur caving expedition broke through forty metres of rubble under a limestone mountain in northern Spain and walked into a chamber no human being had entered in forty thousand years: a wall of ochre handprints, and a painted procession of twenty-three figures carrying a body up through the dark.

Reporting it meant a steel gate on the entrance within a fortnight and none of them ever standing in that room again.

Daniel Harrow is the expedition's draughtsman — a poor, clever, self-taught Welshman who lied about his father to get himself accepted, and who wants one thing in the world: to draw the definitive survey of that mountain, a document with his name on it that will outlive him.

He gets exactly what he wants. What stands in his way is not a detective, not a rival and not the law.

It is the four decent, exhausted, entirely reasonable people standing beside him on a ledge in the dark, and the fact that a map is only a promise, and a promise can be kept in more than one way.

Twenty-three years later a laser scanner is going into that cave, and it does not care what anybody drew.

Told from the far end of a ruined life by a narrator who states his crimes in the first three pages and then spends four hundred proving that suspense has nothing to do with secrets, THE BLANK ON THE MAP is a novel about the exact moment when protecting something beautiful becomes erasing somebody real — and about the discovery that not being caught is not the same thing as getting away with it.

For readers of Donna Tartt, Chris Whitaker, Tana French and Dennis Lehane: a slow-burning, precisely observed literary crime novel set in a green, wet, emptying valley you have never read about, in a world almost nobody has been inside.

If you finish it and find you cannot decide who was guilty — say so in a review. That argument is the book.
