Three hundred and eleven years ago a girl opened her mouth to buy three minutes, and nobody in this city has been silent since.

A mile of the canyon wall came away above a market of four thousand people, and Aneleth Sorr — nineteen years old, a road-singer, in the Throat for the day because it was market day — did the only thing she knew how to do.

She named it in the first bar of a song, and it stopped falling. She has not stopped singing. She cannot. A hold that breaks gives back everything it has deferred, all at once: three centuries of a mountain, arriving in under two seconds.

And she cannot finish it, because at nineteen, in a market full of screaming, she made the song up as she went and never wrote it an ending. So the city built her one.

It built the Choir, and the Deep Room three hundred steps under the rock, and the Kept: nine families whose children are inked at nine years old and who go down, four hours at a time, and come back up having spent a measured and permanent portion of their own voices.

Twelve turns and you cannot speak again. The Kept are first at every table in Amberlow, exempt from every toll, buried in the high ground — and they are silent by fifty, and the whole city has learned to sign so that it can go on talking to them.

Isavel Kenn is seventeen, of the Kept house of Kenn, and she has never heard the song. Everyone in the Throat hears it under everything, the way a person hears their own blood.

Sav hears nothing at all, and has hidden it since she was six, because a Kept who cannot hear the Hold is a hole in the world. What she has done instead, quietly, every eighth day for eleven years, is measure.

A plumb line, a stub of chalk, a mark on a gatepost — and a girl who is not deafened by the sound everyone else is drowning in, and who can therefore see the one thing nobody in Amberlow can see. The stone is moving. It has always been moving.

THE HOLDSONG is a warm, exact, slow-burning fantasy about the difference between keeping a thing and finishing it: about a duty so honourable that nobody has been able to say out loud who is paying for it; about two sisters who love each other and cannot agree about anything that matters; about a woman of nineteen who has wanted one thing for two hundred years and cannot say what it is, because saying it would kill thirty-one thousand people; and about eleven bars of music that nobody ever wrote.

One rigorous magical law, obeyed without a single exception. No spells, no swords, no war, no chosen one, no map. A complete novel with an ending that closes every door it opened — and a last page made of dust, sunlight and an ordinary woman doing an ordinary job properly.

Not book one of anything.

If you love a world you are not told about but put inside; if you have ever been the one person in a room who could not hear what everybody else could; if you want an argument you will still be having with somebody a week later — then read it, and then tell one person.

A book like this lives or dies on a single honest review, which is the only thing in this world that works the way a road-singer's last note does: it lets the whole weight down gently, and everybody underneath gets to walk out.
