There is one house in Wales where no door will shut, and forty nights in it pays two thousand eight hundred pounds. Martha Seeley has been looked at for a living for nineteen years.
She stands still in cold halls while strangers draw her, and when that work is thin she sits up overnight with the newly dead so that nobody else in the house has to.
She is forty-four, she has four thousand one hundred and forty pounds, and she is two thousand seven hundred and sixty short of a one-bedroom flat above a launderette — the first thing she will ever own.
So she takes a job off a noticeboard: forty nights at Callow House, four companions, board and wages, paid in one sum on the fortieth morning, and nothing whatever if you leave early. Callow House is warm, clean, beautifully kept, and completely wrong.
In 1911 its owner took forty-two doors off their hinges and burned them on the lawn, and paid a mason to cut forty-one openings through the inside walls, so that from any room in the building a person can see into another room — and be seen from it.
There are five rules in pencil on the back of the kitchen door. Nobody sleeps alone. Nothing is hung across an opening. The lamp is lit at dusk. And, in a house where nothing closes: if you find a door that shuts, leave it open.
Then, on the ninth of November, at twenty past five in the morning, the hall lamp is already burning — and nobody else in that house is awake. What happens to Martha Seeley over the next thirty-one nights is not violence and it is never once frightening to her.
It is worse than that. Something in Callow House has begun to pay attention to her: to anticipate her, to warm the room she walks into, to mend what she has not mentioned is torn. She has waited her whole life to be looked at properly by anything at all.
And she is the only person in that house who is happy.
A slow-burn British ghost story in the tradition of Shirley Jackson and Susan Hill, NO ONE HERE IS OUT OF SIGHT is a quiet, immaculately built novel about loneliness, about a woman nobody has ever really seen, and about the difference between being watched and being helped — a difference that a valley in mid-Wales learned the hard way in 1911, and has never once said out loud.
Nothing in this book is ever shown to you. That is why you will not be able to put it down, and why you will still be arguing about the last page a week after you finish it. Read it with the lights on.
Then tell somebody — a review takes two minutes, and it is the only way a book like this finds the next reader.
