Every morning, Merle Tarrant drags a strip of dirt smooth beside eleven hundred miles of wire, so that at first light she can read what came to her fence in the night.

For nine years she has held Section Eleven of the Barrier alone: one hundred and forty-three kilometres of netting across the dry heart of the country, one hut, one bore, one dog, and a standing order nobody has ever explained to her. You mend it the same day.

The gate at kilometre ninety-two is never opened.

She has obeyed both without asking, because asking is not what you do, and because eleven years ago her younger brother walked out through that gate and his footprints stop sixty metres into open ground on a claypan that holds a track for a season.

Then a new rider arrives on the next section, and he asks the one question that the whole district has quietly agreed not to ask: why does a fence that was surveyed dead straight in 1936 swing forty kilometres out of line and back again, at enormous cost, in the worst year of the Depression - to put one abandoned homestead and one white claypan on the wrong side of the wire?

In the same week, Merle finds seventy metres of her own fence mended in the night. Tied off from the outside. In a stitch she has never seen a living hand use. What follows is not a haunting.

It is an arrangement - dated, itemised and faithfully kept for fifty-five years - and the only man alive who watched it being made is seventy-two years old with two winters left and a tally book under his bed.

As winter closes in, the count at the wire begins to rise: one, then three, then nine, then more than the district has lost in its entire recorded history. They come across the white pan, and they stop at the netting, and they wait. They are perfectly patient.

And one evening the one standing nearest is a man in a blue work shirt with the sleeves cut off, who calls Merle by a name nobody has used since 1983. He does not ask to be let in.

He asks for something far smaller than that - something entirely reasonable, and inside her job description - and that is exactly how it works.

NOTHING CROSSES is a slow-burn literary horror novel about grief, work, and the terrible cost of keeping a promise nobody can explain to you.

It is told in the plain, unhurried voice of a woman who was extremely good at a hard job, in a landscape so bright and so empty that everything is visible for an hour before it arrives. There are no monsters in a doorway here.

There is only a wire fence, a woman with a shovel, and the thing she wants most in the world standing one metre away on the other side of it, asking politely.

If you read horror for dread rather than gore - if you love Michelle Paver, Andrew Michael Hurley, Catriona Ward or Jane Harper - clear your evening. This one gets in under the ribs and stays.

When you have finished it, tell the next reader what you found at the wire; a review is how books like this one reach the people who are looking for them.
