Every winter, a road is built out of frozen water — and this year it has started saying things before they happen.

For twenty-six seasons, August Chartrand has signed his name at the bottom of every ice measurement on the four hundred and thirty-one kilometres of winter road between Fort Dalquist and the Kesserly Lake mine. Nothing moves on that ice until he says it can.

Twenty-five kilometres an hour. One truck to a span. Never stop. And the rule nobody wrote down: if the ice speaks, hold your speed. Four years ago a truck went through at Board 214 with three men in it.

The load was legal, the speed was legal, the ice was a metre and a third of good blue crystal — and the inquiry cleared August by name and used the word ANOMALOUS eleven times in forty pages. He has never been able to accept it.

A road that kills for no reason cannot be made safe, and making it safe is the only thing he knows how to do. Then the radio begins to echo. A driver calls his position and the same call comes back nine seconds later in the same voice. Through January the gap closes.

In February it goes negative — and the road starts hearing its own traffic before the traffic happens. The crews find out what to do with that. With four minutes of warning, a truck can be stopped short of a crack nobody has found. A convoy can be turned. A life can be saved.

The road runs the best month in its history, nobody is hurt, and August Chartrand is the only man on the ice arguing to switch off the thing that is keeping everyone alive. Because it is not predicting anything.

It is repeating — and once it has said a thing, the road has to make that thing true. On the twenty-fifth of February the channel plays a transmission twenty-one days early. The voice on it is his own.

THE SOUNDING is a slow-burn literary horror novel about ice, guilt and the appalling human need for a reason: a story told in radio logs and drill holes and one perfect voice in the dark, building to a two-hundred- kilometre drive on rotting March ice with the lights off, the radio dead and nothing in the cab that can be played back.

Perfect for readers who want their dread quiet, their characters real and their endings closed. If you finish it at two in the morning with the window open, listening — please come back and leave a review. Books like this one live on the readers who say so.
