In a delta of black water and reed there is one piece of standing stone, and on it a grey building where suffering can be lifted out of one living body — entire, exactly, by touch — and given to another. It cannot be halved. It cannot be softened. It cannot be put down.
Every morning the Bearing House admits forty people.
Outside its gate, thirty thousand wait on rafts for a door that opens once a day, and above them, all night, forty carriers walk a quarter-mile of worn stone, because suffering that is allowed to rest inside a person sets like lime in a pipe.
Sevan has no second name; the House found him on its own steps. Oriel March was bought off a trading raft at eleven and has spent thirteen years planning to leave.
When the dying Keeper names them both to a contest whose rules nobody will explain, they discover something the House has believed impossible for a century — a way to carry, between two people, what neither could hold alone. It works.
The gate opens wider than it has in a hundred and six years. And every life they save brings a thousand more people to the water. What they have not been told is how the contest ends.
It has ended the same way eleven times, and the answer is nineteen steps below the floor they walk on every night.
Told across one year inside the House and nine years outside it, THE LONG CARRY is a novel about mercy with a fixed supply, about the person at the door with the list, and about what it costs to say a true number out loud.
For readers of THE NIGHT CIRCUS, PIRANESI and THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY: a standalone story that finishes, and that will not let you put it down until it does. If it moves you, please leave a review — it is how a book like this finds the next reader.
