She tells you on the first page who died, and who killed him, and that she built the thing that did it. What she cannot tell you yet is that the man they killed had spent his last six weeks trying to prove they were innocent. Beatriz Ordás told the truth once.

She was a chemist at a propellant works outside Burgos, she found that test certificates were being signed before the tests were run, and she had the proof because she keeps a sealed sample of everything that passes her hands. Two men went to prison. The plant did not close.

Nobody in the industry has employed her since.

Two years later the only firm in Spain that will have her is a family of firework-makers on a dry hillside above an inland town where the whole year bends towards one afternoon in August — five and a half minutes of noise and pressure that people drive three provinces to feel.

The house is beautiful, proud, broke, and one licence review away from finished. For the first time in her adult life Beatriz is needed. She would do almost anything to keep her place at that table.

Then a nineteen-year-old dies in a shed on a still morning in May, and in the forty minutes that follow, five people standing in the white light outside its door decide what the fourteenth of May is going to have been.

Beatriz is the only one of them who knows what an investigator will look for. By nine o'clock that night she has told a single-word lie to a man with a torch, and everything else in her life follows from it.

THE GROUND SHAKES FIRST is a novel about the small, reasonable, entirely survivable steps by which decent people arrive somewhere unforgivable — and about what it costs to discover, far too late, that the reason you did it was never there at all.

It is told without a detective, without achase and without a single wasted sentence, by a narrator who refuses every excuse available to her, in a world of heat, dust, whitewashed sheds, long tables under a fig tree, and an art that exists for four seconds and then belongs to the air.

For readers of literary crime who want characters they will argue about for years, a setting they can smell, and an ending that costs somebody something real.

If you finish it and find you have an opinion about what you would have done in that yard, tell the next reader — a review is how a book like this one finds the people it was written for.
