Nobody has to lie for a record to become a lie. Somebody only has to be the only person in the room who understands both halves of it. Nell Coyne is one of four people in her county qualified to interpret British Sign Language in a police station at three in the morning.
She has spent fourteen years being the most reliable pair of hands in the building: the one they call at two a.m., the one who never complains about the rates, the one who has never in her life put a word into a record that wasn't there.
Then she is called out to interpret for a Deaf man arrested over a fraud he did not design — a man she has met before, which is a conflict of interest she is required to declare. Declaring it means he spends the night in a cell with no language at all. She doesn't declare it.
It takes eight seconds and it is the kindest thing she does all year. Two weeks later, the woman who trained her, referenced her and gave her every hour of work she has ever had asks her to correct nine minutes of that interview. The correction is professionally defensible.
The ambiguity is real.
It removes one name from the record of a criminal investigation, and it is the first rung of a ladder Nell Coyne will climb all the way down — while the man whose words she is shaping walks towards a Crown Court with four hundred and six signatures against him and no way on earth to explain himself to anybody without her.
SPEAK FOR HIM is a crime novel about the quietest kind of corruption: the sort committed in good faith, in public buildings, by tired professionals doing almost everything right.
It is about an outsourced service, a register with four names on it, and a community that kept its own records for eleven years because it had learned not to trust anybody else's. There is no violence in it and not one page you can put down.
For readers of British crime with a conscience — of courtroom fiction, of slow-burn corporate thrillers, and of novels that hand you an impossible choice on page forty and refuse to let you off it.
You will finish this book in two sittings, you will spend a week arguing with yourself about what you would have done, and if it stays with you, please leave a review and tell one other reader — for a book like this one, that is the whole of its advertising budget.
